A paper from the leading research group on a topic carries different weight than a paper from a group with no prior track record. This is not snobbery; it is a calibration of how much weight to give the claims before you have read them.
None of these checks substitutes for reading the paper itself. But they help you decide which pass to start with, and they prime your reading with the context that makes comprehension faster.
Active Reading Strategies
Passive reading — running your eyes over the text from start to finish — produces the experience of having read something while retaining almost nothing. Notes written in your own words are the only ones that produce later comprehension, citation, and original insight. If you find yourself copying the paper’s phrasing, stop, close the paper, and write the summary from memory — gaps in your summary reveal gaps in your understanding.
Building a Literature Matrix
A literature matrix — a spreadsheet where each row is a paper and each column is an attribute — is the bridge between reading individual papers and writing a coherent literature review. Without one, you will write a review that lists papers in sequence (“Smith found X. Jones found Y. Patel found Z.”). With one, you write a review that synthesises across papers (“Three studies found X under condition A, but two found Y under condition B, suggesting the moderating role of...”).
Build the matrix in Excel, Google Sheets, or Notion. Suggested columns to start:
- Citation (author, year)
- Research question (one sentence)
- Theory or framework used
- Method (qualitative/quantitative/mixed; sample; setting)
